Announcing the HIC Pro Junior at Waikiki
A New Addition to Hawaii's Pro Surfing Schedule and the 2012 DUKE's Oceanfest - August 20-21, 2012
HONOLULU – (Aug 1, 2012) — ASP Hawaii and Hawaiian Island Creations are pleased to announce a new 1-star event for Pro Junior Men and Women: the HIC PRO Junior. The event is a new addition to the Annual Duke’s OceanFest, a celebration of Hawaii’s ocean lifestyle in honor of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, which runs August 18 through the 26th at Kuhio Beach in Waikiki.
“HIC is pleased to work with the Duke’s OceanFest to provide an opportunity for Hawaii’s top male and female junior surfers to showcase their talents in an ASP environment.” says HIC CEO Leigh Tonai. “We are sure some of these surfers will be representing Hawaii well on the ASP World Tour soon.”
The high cost of international travel for aspiring pro surfers from Hawaii can impede their chances of accumulating valuable ratings points that are imperative for climbing the sport’s ladder. Growth in ASP Hawaii’s regional tour means that athletes are able to amass at least some of those vital points at home, with the ultimate goals of qualifying for the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series (Nov. 12 – Dec. 20), and the elite level ASP World Tour.
“As the international home of surfing, and the home of many national and world champion surfers, it is important for Hawaii to work hard to keep pace with the growth of professional surfing in other regions like Australia, South America, and North America,” says ASP Hawaii Managing Director Marty Thomas – a former world Top 16-ranked professional surfer.
“Pro Junior events provide a clear path for our youth to follow and will ensure that a future in professional surfing remains viable for Hawaii’s athletes.”
There are 12 events on the ASP Hawaii schedule, including professional events for men, women, juniors, and longboarders, collectively offering more than $1.2million.
