Behind the R Dot
Rusty Preisendorfer tells the story of the iconic logo
In 1985, Rusty Preisendorfer, an already accomplished surfboard shaper with a visual arts degree from UCSD, launched Rusty Surfboards and created what has become one of the most iconic logos in all of surfing. The “R Dot,” as it came to be known, was designed to be simple enough for kids to draw on their notebooks. And with the likes of Mark Occhilupo, Kalani Robb, Taylor Knox, and Josh Kerr regularly popping up in magazines and movies riding boards with the “R Dot” logo on them, Preisendorfer succeeded.
Nearly 30 years have passed since the logo’s inception and it still remains a prevalent design in the surf world, as well as on the global surfwear level. In the above video, Preisendorfer dives into the the creative process behind creating the “R Dot” and gives plenty of backstory into the catalyst for branching out on his own.
