San Clemente, CA February 1, 2011: As what some experts are predicting to be the biggest waves of the century approach Mexico today, surfers, spectators and media’s eyes have all turned to the small island of Todos Santos for the impending Big Wave World Tour event: “The Peligroso at Todos Santos”, sponsored by Peligroso Tequila.
“The Peligroso at Todos Santos” is a unique surfing competition whose start date is determined by Mother Nature. There is a two month window for the event to take place to allow for the right combination of swell direction and size. The event will commence only when the waves exceed 30 feet. The official swell forecast is provided by Sean Collins at Surfline.com, who along with SURFER magazine, will supply athletes and fans with continuous live updates and coverage.
Unlike other surf contests, The Peligroso’s Todos Santos event is a Paddle-in competition (no personal water craft tow-ins) where huge waves will only be faced with pure athletic and mental ability. The top big wave Surfers from around the world will compete in this one day event and will be judged on the size of the waves they surf with a simple reference point: “Risks equals reward.”
With sponsorship from Peligroso Tequila, surfers that compete for the Championship Title at Todos Santos also are in the running for a $30,000 USD cash prize as well as valuable points toward the Big Wave World Tour Championship title. Peligroso (translation dangerous) Tequila launched on Cinco de Mayo of last year and has rapidly earned a respected reputation in the spirits industry. “We’re proud to be the title sponsor of the Todos Santos this year,” Peligroso VP of Marketing Christy Farias said. “the athletes , photographers, water rescue, and contest crew, who risk their lives to surf the massive waves at Todos Santos, are extremely dedicated professionals with an intense passion for life. Peligroso Tequila, which embraces this exact philosophy, is absolutely honored to be a part of such an incredible event.”
By invitation only, this event will only be open to the top international big wave riders, top locals and core Latin America big wave surfers. The event hosts 24 invitees, including 2010 Big Wave World Champion Carlos Burle, last year’s event winner Mark Healey, current Big Wave World Tour 2010/2011 leader Jamie Sterling, and Peligroso Team Rider/ Todos local/ International big wave star Greg Long. 12 Invites come from the Big Wave World Tour and 12 are at the discretion of the event. In case one of the invitees cannot make it in time for the event due to the unpredictable schedule, alternate surfers will insure full participation of 24 riders the day of the event. The 12 Big Wave World Tour invitees are the top 6 surfers for the 2009/2010 season and the next 6 surfers from a ranking based on the results from the last five Big Wave events. This includes three Wild Card surfers – including 10 time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater.
All the best big waves riders will be looking forward to the event as another occasion to push themselves and establish their dominance over their competitors.
The Todos Santos event is only made possible by the incredible work by Contest & Tour Director, Gary Linden at Roque Wave Events, and his terrific relationship with the Baja Board of Tourism.
