Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge Returns to Huntington Beach
(HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Dec. 2, 2009) – The legendary Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge is set to return to the North side of the Huntington Beach Pier, for two days of camaraderie-driven competition Jan. 12-17, 2010. More than $28,500 in cash and prizes will be on the line for both individuals and teams, but more importantly, a chance to come together as a team and earn bragging rights.
“It’s back again and the excitement is already building,” says Scott Waring, Katin USA Marketing Director. “After a successful return last year, the Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge is back in 2010 for the second consecutive year, in its original format at its historical north side HB Pier location.”
Last year, Team Hurley took top honors with Brett Simpson and Rob Machado leading the charge, finishing first and second individually. Reef, Darkride and Fox finished in second, third and fourth, respectively. Other top individual performers included Chris Waring (Reef), who finished in third, and Jesse Evans (Darkride), who finished in fourth.
Katin USA, an original surf lifestyle brand, brought the historic event back in 2009 after a 10-year hiatus. It’s return proved hugely successful and memorable with some of the top names in surfing flaunting tremendous skills in prime conditions culminating in one of the best finals the north side of the HB Pier has seen.
Originally founded in 1977 by Nancy Katin, this unique low pressure, camaraderie-driven event boasts a rich and memorable history with a roster of winners that includes World Champions Shaun Tomson, Tom Curren, Martin Potter, Sunny Garcia, Kelly Slater, and, most recently, the 2009 US Open Champion, Brett Simpson.
Drawing a wide range of surf and action sport brands, such as Hurley, Quiksilver, Lost, Fox, Reef, Jack’s, and more, the format will feature 64-80 competitors competing both individually and in four-man teams for a total of 16-20 teams in an open-draw format. Team results will be determined by the placement of individual competitors. Surfers will receive points in each heat (4 pts for 1st, 3 pts for 2nd, 2 pts for 3rd and 1 pt for 4th place). The four teams earning the most points will share in $10,500 worth of advertising and the top eight individuals will receive a cash payout worth $10,000. The prize purse breakdown is:
