Interscholastic Surfing Federation, Oahu Section Contest One Results

| posted on March 12, 2010

Interscholastic Surfing Federation (ISF) is honored to announce the results of its first of three High School Surf Team competitions held on Oahu for the year 2010. Please refer to the following pages for team and individual results.

With conditions looking less than exciting, the High School students of Castle, Farrington, Kaimuki, Kalaheo and Le Jardin were blessed this past Sunday with shoulder to head high surf at Diamond Head Cliffs. Advisory winds had been posted throughout the week leading into the event, and all were happy to see that the winds had subsided a bit on the day of competition.

About 40 students surfed in a team versus team format that the sponsoring non-profit organization, Interscholastic Surfing Federation or ISF, has developed over the last 20 years in California. This format really emphasizes the team aspect of surfing, which is more commonly referred to as an individual sport. To gain points and conquer another team, you must send out 3 of your best (2 in the case of Men’s Shortboard) against 3 of their best. These 3 on 3, or 6 person heats are broken into 5 divisions, which are Men’s Shortboard, Women’s Shortboard, Men’s Longboard, Women’s Longboard, and Coed Bodyboard. The point system gives one point to last place all the way up to six points for first place in the heat. So if a certain school has an all-star surfer that wins the heat, the other school could easily take the lead on points by placing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. After all the divisions have been surfed, a total is given to see which school ends up victorious.

Furthermore, the individual students are acknowledged for their placement in the Team versus Team format by advancing into an Individual portion of competition set later in the day. The top three from each heat of each division (2 from Men’s Shortboard) get seeded into a Semi-Final and ultimately, if they make the final, get rewarded a medal for their efforts that day.

After Sunday’s event at Diamond Head, it is Kaimuki and Kalaheo that have records of 1-0. Farrington High School, the reigning champions from last year, started of the season with a double-header and wound up with a record of 1-1. Castle and Le Jardin walk away with 0-1 records.

If any school, public or private, is interested in starting a Surf Club on O’ahu, please contact ISF via their website at isfsurfing.org. This is the third year in a row that O’ahu Surf Clubs have competed, and with the continued blessing of the State Board of Education, we expect the sport to grow. Our next scheduled event is to be held at Maili Point, Saturday, May 17th, 2010 from 7:30am to 5:00pm, conditions permitting. This is a great spectator event, so come and check it out!
