Dane Reynolds Wins 2012 Rincon Classic

The 2012 Quiksilver Rincon Classic Presented By Channel Islands Surfboards - Dane Reynolds Wins Pro Title, Boelsterli clinches unprecedented 8th consecutive Women's Title

| posted on February 29, 2012

February 15, 2012 – Santa Barbara, CA – The 2012 Quiksilver Rincon Classic will go down in history as having the most legendary clashes in the 29 year history of the fabled event. Each division had it’s favorites going head to head for divisional titles, but it was the professional division that featured the most anticipated match ups of the event. With opening rounds featuring house hold names such as Curren, Reynolds, Martinez, Coffin, and Virs, up against the local underground heroes, the vibe on the beach was electric. No one could believe that WCT drop outs Martinez and Reynolds would be surfing in the event, and for all those on hand, the match ups were a dream come true.

Day one highlights featured a battle of the ages between 3 time world champion Tom Curren and WCT stand out Dane Reynolds. 46 year old Curren was noticeably inspired and opted to ride a 4’11” surfboard that looked like it should have had a kite attached. Reynolds posted some huge scores, but Curren took the victory with a combination of power carves and new school fin free moves. Curren was also a stand out on day two, but fell just short against a charging Parker Coffin and Dane Reynolds in the semi finals.

On the other side of the draw Bobby Martinez was making his intentions known with unmatched speed and power in his backhand vertical blasts, along with immaculate wave selection that showcased him winning every heat enroute to the finals. The other goofy foot stand out was Parker Coffin who put every inch of his frame into his vertical hooks, while mixing in airs and reverses at will. The dark horse of the event was the 2003 pro champion Pete Mussio who combined his aerial antics with powerful hooks in the pocket to progress all the way to the finals.

Martinez dominated much of the finals catching the very best waves and lacerating each section to perfection. He opted to only ride four waves in the final and maintain position, while Reynolds, Mussio, and Coffin searched for middle section gems and scraps. With less than one minute remaining Reynolds who was sitting in third, found an inside wedge, pumped down the line and boosted a huge frontside stalefish to net a 9.5 and take the lead as the horn blew. In so doing, Reynolds clinched his first professional victory in over ten years.

On the womens side, Demi Boelsterli eclipsed the record for most wins in capturing her 8th consecutive title. After securing two solid rides Boelsterli put 110% into a frontside layback slash to get the events only perfect 10 and further cement her status as the reigning queen of the queen.

Another highlight of the event was the Expression Session featuring 14 invitees. The participants included Jesse Billauer, Tom Curren, Pat Curren, Chris Brown, Dane Reynolds, Lisa Anderson, Demi Boelsterli, Jonathon Warren, Dave Smith, Brandon Smith, Adam Virs, Mickey Clarke, Mike McCabe, and Keith Malloy. With zero pressure and 25 minutes to free surf the crew were pushing the envelope of modern surfing.

From the Gremlins to the Legends, the multi generational event showcased the areas finest surfers. For a complete list of results, heats on demand, and more information log on to rinconclassic.com.
