How old is too old to start learning airs?—John Matias, Ventura, CA
“You’re never too old. Michael Ho just started doing them and he’s 53. Just use the wind and stay above your board. To make it, start small. You’ll probably go through a stage of doing wheelie airs. Start small and ride away. What you shouldn’t do is try to land into a barreling closeout. If you land in the trough of a hollow wave, on the explosion you can break your ankles. So only go for that if you’re sure you can completely clear the section and then land where the lip is falling. So…maybe at first, don’t do that at all.”
