Shea Lopez on who to pick for your Fantasy Surfer team heading into Pipe

Mick has surely learned a thing or two from his close friend Andy Irons, who dominated Pipe and Backdoor in any conditions, earned four Pipeline Masters victories, and put Kelly on the defensive as no one had before or has since. With Mick now playing the antagonist to professional surfing's omnipotent hero, he’d do well to channel Andy in the lineup. Don’t expect peace signs, high fives, or sweet nothings to be exchanged between these two ultimate competitors as they tear their way toward the Title. It’s going to be one heck of a show.

After Hossegor, I’m having a hard time believing my own eyes. I watched judges reward the kind of conservative surfing that won heats a decade ago, while more progressive surfing took a backseat. Even the surfers known for constantly pushing what is possible on a wave were pumping the brakes and surfing beneath themselves to cater to the judges’ preferences—which have clearly favored tour veterans.

Shea Lopez on who to pick for your Fantasy Surfer team in Hossegor

For Hossegor, there is a glimmer of hope on the charts for some surf by the end of the waiting period. But if it doesn’t deliver, there are more than a handful of ridiculously talented Brazilians on Tour who can rip anything—all a good value for any Fantasy Surfer team.

I don't buy into the theory that Taj has resigned to casually enjoying his numbered days amongst the top 34, no longer up to the challenge of a world title race or even an event victory. His world title aspirations may be diminishing, but the ability of one of surfing's all-time greats to rise to the occasion and claim an event win is still very much intact.

Shea’s Picks for Chopes

Our World Tour pundit sets his Fantasy Surfer lineup for the Billabong Pro Tahiti

When simply surviving your heat becomes a victory in itself; that’s contest surfing at Teahupoo. A wave intent on beating you down and ripping you limb from limb, a wave capable of expiring your life force if you set your feet wrong. It takes incredible merit and quite the mental fortitude to face a surf […]

Shea’s Bali Roster

Shea Lopez gives his Fantasy Surfer picks heading into Keramas

How can you argue with the body of work John has produced in the last year? You can't. Only Dane Reynolds and Jordy Smith can put out the kind of groundbreaking, jaw dropping, revelatory clips within comparison. A rematch with Kelly in Bali is in the cards for John, and you can guarantee he won't be smiling going into that heat. Florence was once the smallest towhead on the beach, intently watching Kelly rack up world titles from his North Shore sandbox. But today I’ve dropped Kelly from my team in anticipation of the drubbing he will receive.

Shea’s Fiji Roster

Shea Lopez gives his Fantasy Surfer picks for the Volcom Fiji Pro

Cloudbreak is a massive playing field by World Tour standards, with no distinct take off or lineup spots. The competitors who are able to clearly see the different types of waves that peel down the reef through changes in tide and swell will have a tremendous advantage. Thus the Hobgoods and Slater are obvious picks, and unless you are looking to gain some major ground on other Fantasy Surfer players with a gamble or three, it would be wise to not bet against them and go with their proven results in Fiji. If you do decide to bail on Slater, Parko is not to be overlooked here. After a terrible showing in Rio, Parko will be searching for redemption and is always one of the best guys in the water at Cloudbreak, whether competing or freesurfing.

As I watched heats from The Drug Aware Pro, it was clear that the conditions play an important factor in determining which surfer will excel on any given day. For example: When you put a healthy and fit Dusty Payne in big, lumpy Margaret River surf, you can see his experience from big, tricky, windblown waves back home on Maui. It was that sense of comfort and confidence that allowed him to perform at his peak.
