THE SURFER INTERVIEW: ANDY IRONS

Burned out from competition and its relentless physical and mental demands, three-time world champion Andy Irons is about to step away from the World Tour—possibly for a year, possibly for good. This winter, he sat down with Joel Patterson to discuss the “weird year” that led to his decision, and what he hopes to find in a surf life lived without heat horns, the ASP, and Kelly Slater.

Photographer Tom Servais has a special relationship with Tavarua—he’s spent large swaths of time on the island every season, without fail, for more than two decades. Here, he offers insight into this dreamlike particle of land in the South Pacific, and showcases a backlog of imagery that he’s stockpiled during the past year.
